ABOUT
Atana’s Climate Resilience team is led by some of South Africa’s pre-eminent hydrologists and civil engineers: multi-award-winning global experts who are trusted by clients in the private sector and multiple levels of government.
The team’s priority is risk mitigation and business continuity, achieved via a wide range of nature-based solutions to address flood prevention, stormwater and drainage, drought resilience, resilient cities, and disaster management.
Viewing risk as a mix of hazard, vulnerability and exposure, the team is concerned with sustainable water planning and with the impact of climate change, especially relating to drought and high-intensity storm events that cause flooding.
For us, sustainability means integrating practices that reduce negative impacts on people and planet, while promoting environmental, social and economic balance.
Capabilities
1.
Exhaustive flood prevention, including flood studies, economic analyses, social and environmental analyses, and close collaboration with municipalities
2.
Stormwater and drainage services (both independently and alongside Atana’s Aviation and Water Technology teams), extending to regulatory exploration, system optimisation and sustainable planning
3.
Drought resilience and water re-use, designed to tackle South Africa’s historical drought challenges via rainwater harvesting, efficient use, water balances, water catchment and water stewardship
4.
Creating resilient cities and villages, especially in under-resourced areas, via the planning and project management of nature-based solutions, including civils and infrastructure, for water re-use, flood prevention and more
5.
Disaster management and the high-level assessment of disaster-related risk, specific to natural hazards that include drought, flooding, fire, extreme temperatures and lightnin
As the only road that crosses the summit of the Drakensberg Mountain range, Sani Pass’s steep switchbacks, loose gravel, and sudden weather changes meant local communities faced dangerous journeys to access schools, healthcare, and trade routes.
But after nearly two decades of 24/7 operation, its systems were well past their prime. Power systems, water supply, waste management and heating – all critical to survival in Antarctica – were in dire straits.
Calcium and magnesium build-up caused “hard water,” which began to solidify – and clog pipes.
Many roads and vehicles were in poor condition, and safe, reliable transport remained out of reach for thousands.
Atana supported both projects through project management and Clerk of Works services spanning planning, design, procurement, contract administration and construction monitoring.
Designed and delivered by Atana as the primary engineering consultant, the project combines sustainability, speed, and technical ingenuity.
