ABOUT
Serving both the public and private sectors, Atana’s Sustainable Transport team is led by engineering and design experts who specialise in active travel, smart mobility, transport planning, and development planning and engineering.
The team’s priority? To help our clients to intelligently address mobility challenges and to shape the sustainable transport networks of tomorrow, by harnessing both digital technologies and the power of data.
Our integrated approach enables us to improve reliability, performance, and service models, while boosting network capacity and ensuring sound asset management.
The Sustainable Transport team is also able to mobilise quickly to respond to emerging or emergency events in-country and on the continent.
Sustainable Transport services include transport consultancy and advisory services, road safety consultancy, public transport strategy development, environmental consulting (alongside the Climate Resilience team), integrated traffic engineering, and master planning of major networks and traffic flows – both vehicles and people.
This team is becoming increasingly well-known for transport consultancy and advisory services that leverage world-class digital tools and systems; that make it possible for us to deliver far more than just engineering design.

As the only road that crosses the summit of the Drakensberg Mountain range, Sani Pass’s steep switchbacks, loose gravel, and sudden weather changes meant local communities faced dangerous journeys to access schools, healthcare, and trade routes.
But after nearly two decades of 24/7 operation, its systems were well past their prime. Power systems, water supply, waste management and heating – all critical to survival in Antarctica – were in dire straits.
Calcium and magnesium build-up caused “hard water,” which began to solidify – and clog pipes.
Many roads and vehicles were in poor condition, and safe, reliable transport remained out of reach for thousands.
Atana supported both projects through project management and Clerk of Works services spanning planning, design, procurement, contract administration and construction monitoring.
Designed and delivered by Atana as the primary engineering consultant, the project combines sustainability, speed, and technical ingenuity.
